The James Fund

Peterborough Singers Founder and Director Syd Birrell has helped the choir conquer many musical challenges...but many people even beyond the Peterborough community are familiar with the significant challenges faced by Syd and his family during the illness and death of his young son James due to neuroblastoma. During James's lifetime Syd established the James Birrell Fund for Neuroblastoma Research, and it continues to do extremely important work to this day.

The Peterborough Singers has been deeply involved in raising awareness and funds for the James Fund. It commissioned a work by Grammy award winning Canadian composer Paul Halley, "House in Heaven" for which actor Tom Hanks provided the endorsement on the CD jacket and also signed 100 copies. All proceeds from the 2500 CDs sold have gone to fighting childhood cancer. Through the sale of this CD and the "Gift of Song" CD (with soloist Measha Brueggergosman's recording debut), the choir has raised $25,000 for cancer research.
