Peterborough Singers Board of Directors announced on March 14 that it has suspended the remainder of the 2019-20 season and is postponing the choir’s May 9 performance of Verdi’s Requiem, which has been tentatively rescheduled for October 3, 2020.
“Even though we hope that the COVID-19 pandemic will be over by the original concert date, we thought it prudent to discontinue rehearsing together,” explained Artistic Director Syd Birrell. “Following social distancing guidelines is just what’s best in the foreseeable future for the safety of our choristers and community.”
Board Chair Carey Gibson emphasized the Singers Board took this action very seriously. “We are fully aware that this decision may have a negative effect on our financial position, yet we feel that protecting the community is our top priority and a decisive response was our only option.”
Gibson outlined three alternatives for those patrons who have already purchased their tickets for the May 9 performance:
- Attend the October concert: All tickets for the May 9 concert will be honoured at the October performance.
- Exchange your concert tickets for a charitable donation receipt: If you are unable to attend in October, please consider this option, which would help to soften the financial blow to the choir.
- Get a refund: The Singers will refund the cost of tickets to anyone who requests it. If you are not sure whether you can attend in October, simply hang on to your tickets. There is no deadline to claim a refund.
“We are so incredibly fortunate to have so many caring sponsors, donors, and volunteers to rely on,” noted Birrell. “And of course we are fortunate to have our wonderful choristers.”
The choir is sad not to be able to rehearse with one another or to sing for you during this stressful time, but choristers are thankful for your unwavering support. The Peterborough Singers looks forward to performing in front of a healthy and happy audience in October.
Stay tuned and keep well.
