Dear friends,

I am deeply moved to report that we hit our $100,000 goal for Syd’s Legacy Fund by Dec. 31 (to be precise, we hit it in the early hours of the morning on Jan. 1, but close enough!). It was very close, but a handful of last-minute donations pushed us over the finish line.

This generosity speaks volumes about the strength and commitment of this community.

Three weeks ago, I stood in front of the Peterborough Singers for the final time to conduct our annual performance of Handel’s Messiah. Actually, there were two concerts, created out of necessity and gratitude, to welcome the 1,300 people who came to share what would be my last musical event as your Artistic Director.

As I lifted my hands, I was keenly aware that this moment was both an ending and a culmination. I was deeply moved by both performances, and I will carry the sound, the emotion, and the shared energy of those evenings with me for the rest of my life.

Over the past 35 years, the Peterborough Singers has grown into something far greater than I could ever have imagined when we first gathered. Yes, it is a choir that strives for thrilling musical excellence. But more importantly, it has become a place of friendship, safety, inclusivity, kindness, joy, and love. In rehearsal rooms and concert halls, in moments of laughter and moments of quiet support, this choir has reflected the very best of what community can be.

Life has taught me, sometimes rather forcefully, that what endures is not the applause at the end of a performance, but the way we care for one another along the way. Music has always been my language for making sense of the world, and choral music in particular has shown me how deeply human connection can be forged through shared breath and shared purpose. The Peterborough Singers has been living proof of that truth.

As I step away from my role as Artistic Director, it matters greatly to me that these values continue to be nurtured long into the future. That is the heart behind the Syd Birrell Legacy Fund.

The campaign for Syd’s Legacy Fund will continue until the end of this season, so stay tuned for more details. However, for now, it is important that we pause in gratitude to appreciate the remarkable achievement of raising $100,000 in just five weeks.

Personally, it is a relief and deeply gratifying to know that the choir will enter a new year, during which a new artistic director will be selected, in healthy financial shape.

Thank you for your trust, your voices, and your hearts. Thank you for reminding me, week after week and year after year, why this work matters. I leave this role with immense gratitude, deep peace, and unwavering confidence in what lies ahead for the Peterborough Singers.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Syd Birrell
Artistic Director Emeritus
