After 35 years at the helm of the Singers, Artistic Director Syd Birrell has announced that he will be retiring. However, before he hands the reins over to whomever the Singers’ Transition Committee selects as his successor, he plans on having some fun.

The year kicks off with our annual Yuletide concert. This year, Syd will be packing the program with all of his favourite Christmas-themed carols, anthems, and motets. Expect the rafters to shake with the sound of 800 choristers and audience members belting out the sing-along tunes, with the powerful Cassavant organ and the virtuosic Venebrass group accompanying.

Next comes the Messiah, a beloved Singers tradition with great personal significance for Syd and his family. This year, the Singers will welcome six of Syd’s favourite Messiah soloists to perform the solo parts. Expect a powerful and emotional performance, as the two Messiah shows will be Syd’s last as Artistic Director.

In February, the conductor’s baton will be picked up by long-time Singers member Melissa Wotherspoon, who concert-goers will remember from last year’s The Music of Abba. This year, she and the Singers will be bring some warmth to February by performing some of the greatest Broadway tunes. Expect to hear hits from Les Miserables, Rent, Westside Story, and more.

The year ends with a Big Bang (pun intended), with the Peterborough Singers teaming up with the Peterborough Symphony Orchestra for two nights of Joseph Hydn’s epic work, The Creation. This epic oratorio puts into musical form the creation of the cosmos out of the primordial chaos. The combined force of the Singers and the Symphony is an experience not to be missed on this Mother’s Day weekend.
