“Shall we make some music?”

This simple question, posed by new Artistic Director Shawn Grenke, launched the Peterborough Singers’ first rehearsal of its 36th season. And both he and his choir already knew the resounding answer. We were all more than ready! For everyone, this special moment felt like a long time coming, as Shawn was introduced as successor to founder Syd Birrell in March. There had been months of preparation and development, and, because of the shift to a fresh rehearsal and office space at St. John’s Anglican Church, lots of moving! But at 7 pm on the second Wednesday of September, the stage was finally set for the Singers to focus on what all of it was for: music-making, under a new baton.

The first Wednesday evenings of the Singers’ season have always had a “first day of school” kind of charm, but no one could be blamed for thinking that this opening rehearsal felt more like a new school altogether. Still, although different, our new space felt comfortable and somehow familiar, natural, and very caring. With pace, expertise, and plenty of Syd-approved humour, Shawn warmly led choristers through a batch of exciting and ambitious material as the groundwork for November 28’s Yuletide Cheer concert, giving performers their first taste of well-known, original, and somewhere-in-between musical selections. From those marking attendance sheets upon entering to those stacking chairs on the way out, Singers experienced a special occasion in which excitement naturally coexisted with nerves, and satisfaction and expectation were combined.

A post-rehearsal perusal of choristers’ impressions reveals an undeniable enthusiasm for Shawn and what lies ahead for the choir, a sentiment that the Peterborough Singers can’t wait to extend to its audience in the months ahead. After a mid-evening break in which members were encouraged to share an interesting piece of their summer with those beside them, Shawn expressed, beaming, in another simple yet meaningful statement of just how well he fits with this bunch of people: “It’s so nice to see the importance of this community.”

Welcome aboard, Shawn, and welcome back, singers!
