Old friends and new gathered last Wednesday night for the Peterborough Singers’ first rehearsal of the season. The choir tried out a new seating arrangement – it’s a challenge to mix and match 100+ voices! – and welcomed at least a half dozen new members.

Indeed, all through the month of September, Singers are able to “bring a guest” to rehearsal – a potential choir member who might want to “check us out,” in the words of Director Syd Birrell. Syd is interested especially in recruiting tenors and basses, “to keep up with the marvellous inflow of sopranos and altos.” But a good voice that blends and the ability to read music are all that Syd really requires.

Oh! And to pass an audition eventually. The Peterborough Singers is an auditioned choir, so becoming a member requires auditioning. But it is honestly not a very scary experience.

So if you have ever considered joining an excellent choir that performs everything from oratorios to soul music, get in touch with a choir member and ask to be invited as a “special guest” one Wednesday night in September.
