PETERBOROUGH, March 10, 2025 – A Different Kind of ABBA song – “Anthem”

At the Peterborough Singers’ The Music of ABBA concert this past Saturday (March 1, 2025), one song stood apart from the good-humoured breeziness of that pop group’s greatest hits. That song, “Anthem,” written by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, for the 1980s musical Chess, was suggested to Artistic Directory Syd Birrell because of its poignancy and beauty. As Birrell explains, “We had great difficulty finding that precise choral arrangement by Anders Eljas which is perfect for a very capable classical choir. We had to order it from Sweden, it eventually arrived, and we got to work. And yeah, we thought it was a really nice piece of music.”

Partly because choir member Melissa Wotherspoon has a history with this song – “Chess was the first musical that took me out of the orchestra and to the conductor’s podium in university,” she notes – Birrell graciously asked her to prepare the choir to sing it and to conduct it at the concert. All was going to plan….

But recent events upturned everything, making the words difficult to sing but crucial to hear, ideal for this moment, as Birrell explains in his introduction.

“So we offer this song to you in a new light, as we stand united against the growing darkness.”
