On Saturday, May 10, 2025, the Peterborough Singers will perform one of the most famous choral works in the classical repertoire, the Requiem in D minor by Mozart. This gem of a piece, offered for the repose of the soul (requiem means rest), is quite brief, so the Singers will pair it with other music in the liturgical tradition, music that comforts and heals. Another quality unites this music. “Everything in the concert has a mysterious spark, a quality of being exactly right,” explains Artistic Director Syd Birrell.

Mozart’s Requiem will also mark the last time Syd Birrell conducts the choir’s May concert. Syd will retire in January 2026, after directing the Singers’ annual performance of Handel’s Messiah.

Syd discusses the upcoming concert and retirement.

For a fun way to get in the Mozart mood, please join the Singers at Murray Street Baptist Church on Friday, May 2 at 7 pm for a free public screening of Amadeus.
